13 CBD Myths Debunked

Let’s debunk CBD myths, shall we?


I have to admit that I used to fall culprit to some of these common misconceptions. Especially those involving the puzzlement around the plant itself. (I’m gonna save that for a future blog)


Mainly, my ignorance was stemming from a bit of overwhelm from all of the confusion. I didn’t want to look at it. Since full-spectrum CBD is gaining popularity these days, let me help you dig into some of the more common myths and clear the air to start.



Myth #1 - CBD is Illegal


Nope. The specifics vary between the States and Canada but full-spectrum CBD products that contain less than 0.3 percent THC are in fact, legal


Myth #2 - CBD will make you high


That 0.3% does not cause the typical ‘high’ associated with cannabis products (unless you are consuming copious amounts - then there is a chance of experiencing some euphoria)


Myth #3 - CBD has to be smoked


Actually, full-spectrum CBD is most popularly delivered to you via sublinguals (like sprays and tinctures), topicals (like creams and roll-ons), pills and capsules, and edibles (like gummies, tea and chocolate -yum)


Myth #4 - CBD is only for sick people


This one’s kind of obvious. Anybody uses CBD. Just like anyone uses Tylenol or chooses mint chocolate chip ice cream over vanilla. Many healthy people use CBD the way you would a supplement or vitamin


Myth #5 - CBD is sedating


Again, the miniscule amount of THC makes it non-sedating. However, this myth may have been built up from the fact that CBD calms your mind and nervous system, most likely allowing you to have a stress free and fulfilling sleep (I’ve used it regularly and can attest!)


Myth #6 - CBD takes a long time to work


If you’re a lightweight like me it takes 15 min (I’m thinking it was more like 5 min). And for the average human, depending on which delivery method of choice it can range from 15 min to 1-2 hrs. Compared to the onset time for some drugs, that's not long at all


Myth #7 - CBD is addictive


Ready for this myth buster? Not only is CBD not addictive but it may even help with drug addictions. Remember, it doesn’t give you that euphoric high I mentioned earlier. Even with high doses of 1,500 milligrams a day CBD studies have shown no drug dependency


Myth #8 - CBD becomes THC in your stomach


Hahaha. That would be true if your stomach was a lab. Using artificial stomach acid in a laboratory setting, isomerization of CBD has been successful (isomerization is basically the reorganization of the chemical components). But luckily we’ve got a bunch of enzymes floating around in our stomach acid. Because CBD binds to proteins, this is why there has not been a single case of CBD turning into THC in our guts


Myth #9 - The FDA and Health Canada doesn’t regulate CBD products


Not true. Both the FDA and Health Canada do regulate many of the products containing CBD. In the U.S. they restrict it being added to food products or being marketed as a dietary supplement. On top of that, they’ve even approved a prescription drug containing CBD to treat seizures associated with Lennox Gastaut syndrome. All of which falls under the category called ‘regulating’

Myth #11 – Hemp and marijuana are the same


CBD comes from marijuana plants… but wait… also… CBD comes from hemp plants (I know!! This was one of my pre-educated shady ignorance spots). And although both plants come from the cannabis species they are different. Like I mentioned earlier I’m gonna dedicate an entire blog to this one, so stay tuned…


Myth #12 – High doses of CBD are more effective than low doses


This can be true if you are using a CBD isolate, but the beauty of full-spectrum CBD is that all the goodies of the plant work together. A dosage as little as 2.5 mg CBD can be effective


Myth #13 – All CBD is created equal


Remember about marijuana and hemp? Now that we've learned that there are two plant sources, it’s understandable that the quality of CBD is a thing. Variables that affect your CBD quality? How that plant was grown, extraction, whether you’re using isolate, broad-spectrum or full-spectrum (and what the purpose is for), the amount of THC, and the accuracy of the labeling on all of those factors
